How to Heal Your Voice Scar
“My Teacher yelled at me to speak up in front of the whole class even though I was painfully shy.”
“My Brother made fun of my lisp when I was young.”
“My Grandma said it was better for girls to be seen than heard.”
These quotes are from my clients who realized they had a voice scar from their past.
A voice scar, or art scar, is an emotional wound or old belief from an experience that can prevent us from speaking freely and creatively today. đź’”
Although these incredible women started working with me to speak more confidently, they realized their voice scars were holding them back from reaching their full potential.
If you’ve ever been made to feel “wrong” when you speak, you are not alone.
So, although public speaking skills and communication strategies will enrich your life, you can’t feel fully confident until you heal.
đź’— Healing Our Voice Scars
I invite you to think back on your childhood and consider whether there was a time when you were made to feel wrong about your voice. Ask yourself what you were told and whether you still believe it today. Try a writing and speech exercise to start healing your voice scar:
✍🏽 YOUR writing prompts:
What kind of environment did you grow up in? (Ex: Strict, loving, unstable, controlling, chaotic.)
What was your family’s general communication style? (Ex: Loud, reserved, affectionate, remote)
Did you feel like you were fully seen and heard as a child? Why or Why not?
đź‘„ Here is your vocal exercise to help you heal:
Did you know that humming is healing for your vocal cords and nervous system?
When you hum, you produce physical vibrations that help lower your heart rate, stimulate your vagus nerve, and create calm.
The next time you want to feel calmer, try humming, “Hmmmmm” 🎶

Remember that although these voice scar experiences helped shape you, they do not define you.
The goal is to uncover the source of your voice scar and release any blocks that prevent you from realizing your full vocal power and ability.
